Facts about the Öresund region

The Öresund region is one of Europe’s most expansive. One of the most significant driving forces behind this is the integration between the cities of Malmö and Copenhagen. The region is home to nearly 3.8 million people and no fewer than 170,000 companies which actually generate as mush as a quarter of Sweden’s and Denmark’s total GNP.

The major infrastructure investments in the region are also very important for the countries’ dynamics and attractive forces. The largest investment to date, the Öresund Bridge, comprises in effect the starting gun for the integration that formed the basis of the Öresund region as we know it at present. Today, around 16,000 people commute between home and work on respective sides of the sound. This would have been impossible without the bridge.

The Citytunnel project in Malmö is now in progress. This is a communications solution that will provide a rail link north of Malmö with the rail track to Trelleborg, Ystad and Copenhagen. This will greatly facilitate travel throughout the entire region. The Citytunnel was completed in December 2010. Further additions to both railways as well as roads in the region will further contribute to favourable development of the Öresund region.
